Alex is dedicated to building an economy that supports healthy communities while protecting the natural systems upon which all life depends. Before joining the firm, he was the David Suzuki Foundation's Senior Climate and Energy Analyst.

He has advised all levels of government, businesses and NGOs on advancing sustainability with an emphasis on climate change, energy and resource efficiency. He has worked with climate champions across North America, and led award winning community energy and climate plans. He received an Action Canada Fellowship for policy excellence and earned his MSc at University of Oxford where he was a British Council Scholar.

Alex operates from the premise that our greatest challenges are institutional not technological. He hails from Chilliwack, BC. When not working to protect the climate, he is out enjoying it in the rainforested Coast Range.

Bud Fraser

Bud has eighteen years of combined engineering, project management and research experience in Canada, Europe and Asia. With a background originally in Electrical Engineering, Bud engineered communications systems for MDI/Motorola in many locations worldwide from 1988 to 1994, including some of the first wireless data networks in the world.

Since 1997 Bud has focused his work on environmental and sustainability projects, developing and implementing innovative waste management technology, and integrating technical aspects such as biological processes together with information technology. His role at HB Lanarc focuses on strategic and integrated technical approaches to buildings, infrastructure systems and resources including water, wastewater, solid waste and energy, with a strong project management component. Most recently Bud has been involved in the development of green building, energy and infrastructure workshops and strategies for developers and municipalities.

Joaquin Karakas

Joaquin is an urban design planner with over 5 years of professional urban design and planning experience including project management, integrated land use, transportation and site planning, preparation of urban design guidelines, housing research, policy and typology development, and public event and design workshop facilitation. Joaquin has extensive experience managing large planning teams effectively facilitating communication between clients, stakeholders, and the planning team.

Joaquin has worked with a variety of clients in a range of contexts from large urban centres, to transforming suburban centres, to small rural, resource, and tourism based communities. Joaquin is a Full Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, a co-founder of the Healing Cities Working Group and a past member of the Vancouver City Planning Commission

Peter Whitelaw

Peter is a community planner with a focus in sustainable urban development. He holds degrees in Chemistry and Community and Regional Planning and a post-graduate diploma in Environmental Science. Peter’s strengths lie in his analytical skills and strategic approach to implementation. His professional work has ranged widely, including: urban sustainability, land-use regulation, public participation, environmental management, and community design.

Peter is a member of the Board of the Dynamic Cities Project, and Chair of the Board of the False Creek Watershed Society.

Jana Zelenski

Jana brings a strong background in landscape architecture and planning to HBL and a belief that the best design solutions are reached through comprehensive planning and process. She is responsible for planning and design development, communications, community process and site implementation.

Jana has collaborated with municipalities on a variety of scales and has had multiple opportunities to work through community and client consultation processes. Jana’s recent projects have included work at both the community and site scales, development of client and community relationships and supervision of design construction and completion.

With degrees from the University of Guelph and Penn State and overseas exchanges, Jana’s education in landscape architecture has allowed her to develop a broad range of skills including technical, graphic and research abilities that she combines to produce effective solutions to complex problems.
